Quincy Powerball winner claims US$1.04 billion jackpot

Last updated

The winner of a US$1.04 billion Powerball jackpot on a ticket bought in Quincy, Illinois, has claimed the prize, the Illinois Lottery confirmed on September 15, 2026.

The winning draw took place on August 12. The player chose a lump sum payment and requested anonymity, resolving the outstanding claim without making their identity public.

The ticket was bought at Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh

The winner purchased a single US$2 Quick Pick line at Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh, 310 N. 36th Street in Quincy. It matched the five white balls, 4, 26, 66, 67 and 69, and red Powerball 9.

Powerball's official results list Illinois as the jackpot winning jurisdiction for that draw. They also record a US$2 million Power Play winner in Massachusetts and Match 5 winners in Arizona, California, Florida and North Carolina.

The Quincy retailer received a US$500,000 bonus for selling the jackpot ticket, according to the Illinois Lottery.

What the two jackpot amounts mean

Powerball lists the August 12 jackpot as US$1.04 billion, with an estimated cash value of US$450.5 million. The larger figure represents the annuity option, rather than the amount paid immediately to a winner choosing cash.

Under Powerball's US payout rules, the annuity consists of an immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that rise by 5% each year. The cash option is a single payment. Both advertised amounts are before applicable taxes.

The September claim announcement confirms the winner's cash election but does not state their final payment after taxes. The US$450.5 million figure is the published draw cash value, not a disclosed net payout.

The winner prepared before claiming

The Illinois Lottery said the player spent several weeks working with legal and financial advisers before submitting the claim. Legal representatives worked with the Chicago Prize Center to complete the process.

Illinois permits winners of prizes worth US$250,000 or more to request anonymity. The operator described this award as the state's second largest lottery prize at the time of the announcement. The September development was the completed claim for the August jackpot.
