The US Mega Millions has updated the rules of the game! From now on the minimum jackpot will be $40 million instead of only $15 million. This is a huge change in regards to lotto jackpots around the world as the Mega Millions is now on par with the Powerball that also has a $40 million minimum jackpot and now the USA has not only 1 but 2 of the biggest minimum jackpot games in the world. Just like with everything else that they do, Americans always have to be the biggest and the best at everything it seems.
Why The Change?
Bigger Jackpot = More Ticket Sales = Even Bigger Jackpots
Bringing up the minimum jackpot will increase sales and in turn because more people are buying tickets the jackpots will get even bigger. Most of the time the Mega Millions has a few roll-overs before anyone wins the jackpot and this means that the prizes will be a lot bigger then before. The Mega Millions already holds some of the record breaking jackpots of over $600 million and soon we will be seeing even bigger records from this lotto game.
What Are The Odds Of Winning?
With the new minimum jackpot also come new rules and smaller odds. The odds of winning the jackpot used to be 1 in 258,890,850 and will be from now on 1 in 302,575,350 as the Mega Balls pool has been changed from 1 from 1 – 15 to 1 from 1 – 25. On the other hand, winning second and third prizes has become easier as the main number pool has been changed from 5/75 to 5/70 which has made the chance of winning 2nd and 3rd teir prizes easier. For example a division 2 prize worth up to $5 Million used to have winning odds of 1 in 18,492,204 and now instead has better chances of 1 in 12,607,306.
What To Do To Win?
If you want to win the Mega Millions jackpot you must first purchase a ticket. Keep in mind that if for example 302,575,350 tickets are sold for the draw, only 1 of them statistically will win the jackpot. It is a game of pure luck, but someone has to in it and the only way to have a chance of winning is to buy tickets! There is however a way to slightly increase your chances of winning and that is by joining a Mega Millions syndicate that buys many tickets for each draw.
